How to Spend October in Yurok Country

Can you feel it? The crisp air, the hint of wood smoke, and the golden light filtering through the trees? October in Yurok Country is something special—here’s what you need to know if you’re visiting this month.

1. Unpredictable Weather

October can surprise you. One minute it’s warm and sunny, the next you’re reaching for a sweater. Bring layers, and you’ll be ready for whatever the day throws at you—whether you’re hiking through the redwoods or strolling the coast.

2. Relax at a Cozy Cabin or Hotel

October feels like the right time to slow down and get cozy.  After a day of hiking, kayaking, and exploration, curling up with a book and eating good food is a great way to end the evening in our book. The Redwood Hotel and Casino has comfortable outdoor seating with fire pits to keep you warm, and the Requa Inn is known for its delicious food and homey atmosphere. 3. Is Stout Grove Haunted?

The redwoods of Yurok Country are known for their peaceful ambiance, but some say Stout Grove has a mysterious side. With its ethereal light filtering through the ancient trees, it’s easy to see why visitors have reported a spooky presence. Some even claim to have captured unexplained figures in their photos, adding to the grove’s eerie reputation. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, Stout Grove is undeniably magical—especially in October.

4. Autumn Bird Migration

If you love birdwatching, October in Yurok Country is perfect. Fall migration means you’ll see everything from hawks and eagles to shorebirds and songbirds. Check out spots like the Klamath River estuary or Lake Earl for waterfowl, and Sue-meg State Park for falcons and seabirds. Keep an eye out in the redwoods too—you might spot the rare marbled murrelet. Grab your binoculars and head out, the early bird gets the worm!
