Drive a few short miles up Hiqhway 101 from downtown Klamath and you’ll find one of our favorite local destinations, Paul’s Famous Smoked Salmon Jerky.

Ask anyone at the Visitor Center, and we’ll tell you it’s THE place to stop and taste the authentic local flavor of salmon caught in the Klamath River.  Or if you’re running short on time, visitors can purchase the smoked salmon here, just ask for it!  We just can’t get can’t get enough of Paul’s smoked salmon jerky which comes in a variety of savory flavors like Lemon Pepper, Jalapeño and of course mouth watering Candied Salmon.

A Yurok-owned business, Paul’s salmon is always fresh and carefully smoked using the time tested traditional open pit manner used by the Yurok people for hundreds of generations. Paul’s also provides native caught Klamath River salmon daily to the Abalone Bar & Grill inside the Redwood Hotel Casino-something every visitor should try!

Salmon is an important resource for Yurok Tribal members. “The Yurok word for salmon, Ney-puy, translates to ‘that which is eaten'”, it says in the January 2015 edition of Yurok Today. “Ney-puy, for many Yurok families, means being able to eat three meals a day. The meat is smoked into jerky, kippered and/or frozen in vacuum-sealed bags, making it possible to cook nutritious meals year-round.”
